Ukraine in Focus: A Conversation on War, Peace, and the Future

  • 02 Jul 2025
  • 8.00 pm - 10.00 pm

We have organised something very special for our next social event on the 2nd of July.

When speaking to members and voters across Wandsworth, it’s clear that the suffering and courage of the Ukrainian people has moved many deeply. Their fight is not just for their homeland – it’s for the survival of democracy in Europe.

We see headlines every day. But beyond the headlines lies a vital question: how do we help Ukraine secure not just peace, but a just peace – one that doesn’t reward aggression or sacrifice freedom?

To help answer that, we’ve assembled an exceptional panel of voices:

  • Mike Martin, our MP for Tunbridge Wells, is a member of the Defence Select Committee and the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, a Senior Fellow at King’s College London, and a former British army officer who served in Afghanistan.
  • Rosemary Thomas is the Chair of Lib Dem Friends of Ukraine and an expert on Eastern Europe. She formerly served as the British Ambassador to Belarus, FCO Deputy Director for Eastern Europe (advising on Ukraine during the 2014 annexation of Crimea), and Head of Communications and Reporting of the EU Mission to Ukraine (based out of Odesa).
  • Irina Rapiyi is the Deputy Director of Support Ukraine and has a long association with Battersea.

Our panel will be chaired by Wandsworth Lead Campaigner, Josh Hughes. Together, Josh, Irina, Mike and Rosemary will explore:

  • What does a just and lasting peace look like for the people of Ukraine?
  • What does it mean both militarily and in action in parliament for our MPs?
  • What role can the Wandsworth LibDems play in supporting Ukraine's need for a just peace?

Don’t expect a dry policy debate – we’ve planned a warm, energising evening full of heart, inspiration, and a few unexpected touches to keep things fun.
